| “Our vision is to provide elementary school students the opportunity to develop essential life skills such as the power to think ahead, make good choices, and think analytically. As classrooms have become increasingly diverse, it was important that we design our First Move program with tools that bridge social, economic, and cultural boundaries, in order to narrow, and eventually close the achievement gap.” |
| “Kids see chess as a game; they don't realize the powerful learning that goes on while they play. Teachers see students picking up math concepts more quickly, a better aptitude for reading comprehension, a new sense of focus and more courtesy towards others. First Move is offered during the School Day as a supplemental curriculum to the existing core curriculum. Our focus is not on competition or tournament play, but rather in the thinking skills that are an inherent part of chess.” |

Mequon's parent-driven chess club : A model for Success
Members of the Mequon Scholastic Chess Club worked hard last year. They took chess lessons from their teacher, played chess against sometimes formidable opponents, completed take-home worksheets, and were expected to master chess notation.
But they also got to wear cool T-shirts, worked their way up a chess ladder, competed in tournaments, visited a water park, attended a pizza party, and earned year-end awards.
That’s the key to the club’s phenomenal success, says Ben Wong, one of its two parent coordinators. “We want to make sure the kids not only learn chess, but also have fun.”...

Chess is the Cure for Cabin Fever at St. Bernadette’s
143 players from 32 area schools braved the cold Wisconsin weather for a chance to get out of the house Saturday January 17, 2009. Many southeastern Wisconsin schools have been closed for the past two days due to the bitter cold wind chill. Today, the temperature climbed well above zero, and scholastic chess players welcomed the chance to get out and play some chess.
"Because we were closed Thursday and Friday, we didn't have the chance to get things all set up, especially for such a big turnout" explained tournament host Ann Bohn. "We had to scramble to find enough tables and chairs for the skittles area." she said. Most of the players, parents and coaches were very understanding, many volunterred to help carry chairs to the skittles area and assist in other ways.
One unique feature at St. Bernadette’s is the K-2 section, which is limited to players in kindergarten, first and second grade only. “It’s nice to give the littlest ones a chance to play in a section where everyone is about the same size. It helps reduce the intimidation factor” Bohn said.
In the K-2 section, the team from Montessori School of Waukesha took top honors. In the K-5 section, the "Knights of Lake Denoon" from Lake Denoon Middle School in Muskego won the first place trophy. In the K-8 section, Rose Glen Elementary from Waukesha took home the first place trophy. Click here for results Click here for photos
